About the original work

Van Gogh spent almost three months in Drenthe in 1883, where he was deeply impressed by the landscape of heathland and peaty soil. In his drawings and paintings he tried to capture the atmosphere and mood of the countryside in autumn. He painted several landscapes in dark colours, sometimes with working figures.

His letters show that he painted at least eighteen studies during his stay, but most of them have been lost. Today, only five paintings are attributed to the Drenthe period, Farmer Burning Weeds is one of them. All Drenthe paintings in Dutch public collections. In addition to Farmer Burning Weeds, the Drents Museum also owns De Turfschuit. The collection of the Van Gogh Museum contains three other works from Van Gogh’s Drenthe period.
