In Afro Surinamese winticulture, the colors blue & white represent the kabra, the ancestors. The blue refers to the royal ancestral line of West Africa, the white for death, as well as purity and cleanliness. Since the 17th century, Delftsblauw has been an archetypal Dutch tradition.
What happens when we bring these two traditions together in one showpiece? Does that create something like Kabra Blauw? With that design question Boris van Berkum set to work. In collaboration with Winti priestess Marian Markelo, he designed a new collection of Kabra Blauw, including this lidded vase. It is a miniature of the larger hand-painted showcase vase, of which Museum Boijmans van Beuningen purchased two for its museum collection.
Manufacturer: Heinen Delfts Blauw.
