Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday, often referred to as the “Festival of Lights.” Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and nights, starting on the 25th of the Jewish month of Kislev, which may fall anywhere between late November and early December on the secular calendar. For eight nights, families say prayers and then light candles in an eight-branched candelabra called a menorah. Most families also serve special holiday foods, sing songs, play games, and give gifts, including Hanukah gelt (chocolate coins).

The Jewish Cultural Quarter

The Jewish Cultural Quarter in Amsterdam consists of the Jewish Historical Museum, the JHM Children’s Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue, the Hollandsche Schouwburg, and the National Holocaust Museum.

The Jewish Cultural Quarter invites its visitors to acquaint themselves with Jewish culture and history, to deepen their existing knowledge, and to think actively about the subject of cultural diversity. Their basic principle is to make the Jewish story accessible in a positive way to as much of the general public as possible.

The Jewish Cultural Quarter offers a range of fascinating exhibitions, all pertaining to the past, present and future of Jewish culture. Book your tickets for a visit, or discover a part of the collection in the online museum.

The Museum Shop of the Jewish Historical Museum offers a wide range of products, including a great many art books, surveys, and catalogues with scholarly information on the collection and on the temporary exhibitions. You can also buy Jewish literature, books for adults and children about Judaism, CDs with Jewish music (Klezmer, Hazzanut, Sephardic music, Yiddish songs, and classical music) and gifts here – and there is a wide range of picture postcards, gadgets, hamsas and other special jewelry. The Museum Shop in the Jewish Historical Museum is open every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
