About the original work
While most of his contemporaries still painted their Drenthe landscapes in the classical style of the Hague School, Simon Moulijn came up with this very modern canvas in 1894. With elegant but sleek contour lines and a sparse color palette, a standard Drenthe landscape of farms with thatched roofs, a sandy path and some bushes suddenly becomes a stylized modern landscape. Moulijn worked several times in Drenthe at the end of the nineteenth century.
About the artist
“Painter of romantic loneliness”, is how Simon Moulijn (1866-1948) is called because of the dreamy landscapes he captures. The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France, Moulijn draws his inspiration from all over Europe. In 1894, the year in which he recorded this farm, he became strongly influenced by Symbolism. He depicts nature in a simplified manner, as can be seen here in the dark outline of the figures and the lack of shadows. In addition to paintings, Moulijn also makes many watercolors, illustrations for fairytale books, etchings and lithographs. He even writes two books about lithographs to draw more attention to graphic art. He is also closely involved in the organization of various exhibitions around the world. For example, he organizes an exhibition in San Francisco and Budapest for which he receives prizes. His commitment to art was rewarded in 1938 with appointment as Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
