Puzzle Vermeer “The Little Street”

An unusual painting in Vermeer’s oeuvre: a quiet street with houses and a few people. Right angles determine the balanced composition; the triangle of heaven adds tension. The old walls, coarse bricks and the white plaster are almost tangible. Yet Vermeer has also allowed himself freedoms, such as the oversized green window shutters.
