About the original work
In Tableau I, Mondrian definitively lets go of the rigid rhythm of the regular grid that he used in his earlier checkerboard compositions. He breaks regularly. It is replaced by a more or less central axis around which the composition develops. Symmetry is lacking and by adding fields and strips of red, yellow, blue and black, a blue-greyish white and a whitish blue, a composition is created that breathes tranquility but is also lively at the same time. The painting opens outwards on all sides because the black lines on the edge disappear outwards. This is in contrast to earlier works where the lines stop before they reach the edge, such as Composition with a large red area, yellow, black, gray and blue (1921).
