This bond was defined for centuries by colonialism and slavery, a past that left deep traces. The dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010 was seen as a new start of the kingdom relations, but there are now many mutual disappointments. Based on years of research, Oostindie and Veenendaal show how different people think about kingdom relations on both sides of the ocean, where the discomfort and bottlenecks lie in the relationship, and how things could be improved.

Ongemak zes Caribische eilanden en Nederland
€22,50
(only available in Dutch)
The six Caribbean islands in the Kingdom have been connected to the Netherlands for almost four centuries. Antilleans are very well aware of this, but things are different in the Netherlands. There is not much knowledge about the islands, nor a strong sense of belonging: they may not be seen as foreign, but certainly not as domestic. Despite the long shared history, the emotional distance has always remained great. In Ongemak Gert Oostindie and Wouter Veenendaal describe the past, present and future of the bond between the Netherlands and the islands.
