In this new publication “Kruistocht door Drenthe’’ (Crusade through Drenthe) master-woodcutter Siemen Dijkstra stays close to home. For almost thirty years, he has documented the landscape of Drenthe in prints and drawings. Cycle with him and criss-cross through beautiful Drenthe. While it still oozes beauty, the landscape now has to endure ruthless efficiency and profiteering of intensive agriculture. Jan van Ginkel, an expert of the natural and cultural history of Drenthe, adds background information and a broader perspective.
Siemen Dijkstra: “In many ‘picture books’ about Drenthe you see beautiful landscape pictures of heathland and sheep, and beautiful close-ups of flowers and insects, I was also guilty of doing this. But these picture books give a distorted and false picture of reality. The agricultural areas are avoided, as if that landscape, which makes up more than fifty percent of Drenthe, does not exist.
I see it as my task to convince people that Drenthe’s landscape is a result of our own actions. The landscape determines our identity. If we continue to burden the landscape, we will have to search eternally for places on this globe where we feel ‘at home’ – but we will never find them.”
This beautifully executed bound publication is printed on softly tinted acid-free paper.
“Kruistocht door Drenthe” is only available in Dutch.
