About the original work

It is 1875. Julius van de Sande Bakhuyzen and his sister, Gerardine, are on summer holiday in Drenthe. He immediately falls in love with the idyllic landscape. Every summer and sometimes even in the fall, Van de Sande Bakhuyzen travels to Drenthe and paints away. “Drenthe is actually a large open-air museum,” he wrote to his good friend Geert Jannes Landweer in 1910. Van de Sande Bakhuyzen became a landscape painter, just like his father. His sister and he received drawing and painting lessons from their father from an early age. Gerardine becomes successful painting landscapes and flower arrangements. Eventually she even teaches Princess Maria, widow of Prince Hendrik. The other two brothers both become astronomers. Van de Sande Bakhuyzen mainly paints landscapes, preferably farm landscapes. Drenthe with its heaths and forests is extremely suitable for this. The impressive trees in this painting that provide shade for the cows and their herder take the viewer back in time. The sun that occasionally shines through the leaves gives the whole a warm feeling. Until his death, he continued to promote the “irresistible province” in dozens of letters and hundreds of drawings and paintings.

About the artist

Julius Jacobus van de Sande Bakhuyzen (The Hague, June 18, 1835 – The Hague, October 21, 1925) was a Dutch painter and etcher.

Van de Sande Bakhuyzen, member of the Backhuijsen family, was a son of Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen (1795-1860) and Sophie Wilhelmina Kiehl (1804-1881). Julius, like his sister Gerardine, received his first drawing and painting lessons from his father, who was a painter. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In 1871 he won the large royal medal at an exhibition in Amsterdam, with his work The Pond in the Hague Forest. From 1875 onwards he spent most summers in Drenthe, often together with his sister Gerardine.[2] As a painter he is considered to belong to the Hague School. His oeuvre mainly includes landscapes.

Van de Sande Bakhuyzen was a member of a number of artist associations, such as Arti et Amicitiae and Pulchri Studio. He was co-founder of the Pulchri Studio etching club.
