Jacob Olie (1834-1905) was a pioneer in the field of photography. He probably took his first pictures in the summer of 1861, with a camera that he built himself. Olie quit photography around 1870, but restarted in 1890 when he retired. Until his death in 1905, he took more than three thousand photos of rapidly changing Amsterdam.
