Indies, Enchantment and Disillusionment (Indië, betovering en desillusie)

‘A Sumatran tiger hung above my boy’s bed.’

This is how Thom Hoffman’s fascinating and visual journey through time begins. As a 13-year-old, under an imposing tiger’s head, he dreamed about the sepia-colored Dutch East Indies, the country of his grandparents. Grandma and grandpa died shortly after each other. What had their life been like in the Indies? Because Thom could no longer ask his favorite grandmother questions, he started looking for answers.

Touched by Couperus, Multatuli, Kousbroek, Kartini, Székely-Lulofs and other writers, and by films and documentaries, Hoffman has made a personal journey over the past thirty years. He started collecting books about the Dutch East Indies and the more he read, the clearer the contours of the colony under Dutch authority became, from the VOC to the transfer of sovereignty in 1949. A history that goes far beyond family histories.

De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam

The Indies as a backdrop for enchantment, mystery and scandal, but also the battleground for views on change. The Indonesian struggle for freedom revived. How did the Netherlands deal with this? Fascinating personalities such as Jacob Haafner, Baron Van Hoëvell, Kartini, Tan Malaka, Hatta and Soekarno complete a kaleidoscopic and often moving picture.

Indies, Enchantment and Disillusionment is a fascinating and personal search for the truth behind this former Dutch colony.
