This book brings the Impressionists together with their predecessors, contemporaries and followers. The rich collection of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg offers the opportunity to juxtapose masterpieces by Monet, Renoir and Pissarro alongside the work of established names of their time, such as Delacroix, Gérôme and Corot, and that of followers such as Gauguin and Cézanne .

Could Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley have foreseen how famous and influential their work would become; that Impressionism would become one of the most beloved art movements of all time? At the time, the omens were far from favorable. Their practices and beliefs ran counter to the prevailing academic tradition and shocked the rigid French art world.

The colorful works, often painted outdoors, were fiercely criticized. In 1874, a Parisian art critic spoke mockingly of ‘les impressionists’. It became their nickname.

Comprised of paintings, sculptures and drawings, Impressionism, sensation and inspiration provides a picture of five decades of French art and of the Impressionists of their time. The book also pays attention to all the paintings that the Hermitage owns by Vincent van Gogh. These works are not allowed to travel and therefore cannot be exhibited in Amsterdam, but are all depicted and described in this book.
