About the original work

Landscape near Vries with a plowing farmer is one of the few Drenthe landscapes by H.W. Mesdag, who is best known for his seascapes. Mesdag regularly stayed in Vries with his brother Taco and sister-in-law Gesina. He painted this landscape in this environment. The cloudy sky is reminiscent of great landscape painters such as Jacob van Ruisdael, while the peasant figures seem to announce the arrival of Van Gogh. On the back of the painting, Mesdag wrote in large letters: ‘Sent by rail, Vries September 29, 1877’. The work was once part of the collection of Panorama Mesdag in The Hague and, after being sold through private collections in the United States, is now back in a Dutch museum collection.

About the artist

Hendrik Willem Mesdag (Groningen, February 23, 1831 – The Hague, July 10, 1915) was a Dutch painter, watercolorist, etcher and lithographer.

Mesdag was the master naval painter of the Scheveningen bomb barges. He belonged to the Hague School. His best-known work is the Panorama Mesdag of Scheveningen, exhibited on Zeestraat in The Hague. Caulking and Preparation for Departure are two other paintings by Mesdag. He was also a renowned art collector with his own museum, the Museum H.W. Mesdag, now known as The Mesdag Collection, on the Haagse Laan van Meerdervoort.
