In the Middle Ages you carried your own cutlery in a knife sheath. This consisted of a knife, and usually also a dining pin/sharpening steel to pierce your food and sharpen your knife. There are often extra compartments for a smaller knife and/or scissors. You wore a knife sheath on your belt, because medieval clothing had no pockets.
In Dordrecht, approximately 550 knife sheaths, 80 dagger sheaths and 100 sword scabbards were found in various excavations. The knife and dagger sheaths are almost all beautifully decorated. The decoration of this sheath consists of lily-like calyxes, with a background pattern of comb impressions. This is similar in style to Art Nouveau/Jugendstil. That is not surprising, because around 1900 this art movement used the Middle Ages and nature as a source of inspiration. And once again this medieval decoration inspires: now as a fashion print on modern tights.
