Ferdinand Bol en Govert Flinck

Govert Flinck (1615-1660) and Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680) are considered Rembrandt’s two most important pupils. In this publication, the artists are taken out of the shadow of their teacher. Bol and Flinck are gratefully comparable. As young artists, both moved to Amsterdam to complete their training with Rembrandt. After leaving Rembrandt’s studio, they initially remained faithful to his style, but then each chose their own direction. The contemporaries became formidable competitors for their former teacher, but also for each other. With status-enhancing portraits and dramatic scenes from the Bible and Antiquity, Bol and Flinck met a need among the prosperous merchant elite in Amsterdam and beyond.
