Background
Artist Anatol Donkan designed this frog amulet. The artist belongs to the Nanai people from Southeast Siberia and has mastered the old crafting techniques of his people. The traditional Shamanist beliefs of the Nanai feature in the exhibition Healing Power at the Tropenmuseum. The exhibition Healing Power includes Donkan’s spectacular Shaman coat, designed exclusively for the Tropenmuseum.
Donkan also designed this frog amulet for the museum shop. The amulets are made of vegetable tanned salmon leather and hand sewn by a retiree in St. Petersburg. Besides the frog amulet, you can also choose a snake amulet, that stands for knowledge and community, or a talisman amulet, that stands for friendship and luck.
Warning: as this is a handmade product, colour and size may slightly differ from the picture.
Healing Power
The exhibition Healing Power presents healing traditions across the world. The curators have brought objects from the Arctic to South America together with work by contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst and Marina Abramović.
Healing Power introduces a range of ritual specialists and healing practices that are important to many people around the world. The range is very wide: from winti and ayahuasca to shamans and witches.
The exhibition will be on at the Tropenmuseum until June 2022.
