Jacob Marrel

Jacob Marrel (1613–1681) was a German-born still-life painter and draftsman, renowned for his exquisite depictions of flowers, fruits, and insects. Born in Frankenthal, he studied under Georg Flegel and later settled in Utrecht, where he became associated with the Dutch Golden Age painters. Marrel specialized in meticulously detailed floral compositions that celebrated nature’s beauty and showcased his mastery of texture, light, and color. His works, often featuring tulips during the height of “Tulip Mania,” reflect both the scientific curiosity and aesthetic elegance of the period. In addition to his painting, Marrel was an influential teacher, counting renowned artists like Abraham Mignon among his students.
