De focus ligt op Leidse kunstenaars, met als speerpunt werk van Rembrandt van wie vooral werken uit de eerste tien jaar van zijn loopbaan zijn opgenomen. Het overige werk komt uit Leiden en Amsterdam, waar in de loop van de zeventiende eeuw zeer herkenbare, aan elkaar tegengestelde schilderscholen bestonden. Waar Leiden kon buigen op de fijnschilders die in hun tijd al werden geroemd om hun gladde verftechniek en levensechte imitatie van materialen, werd in Amsterdam de toon gevoerd door schilders die in navolging van Rembrandt een suggestieve rulle schildertrant hanteerden.<\/p>\n
