Yixing Cups

17,9029,90

In the past (starting around the 7th century), tea in China was prepared by grinding tea bricks into powder and whisking it directly in a cup. However, in the 14th century, the use of tea leaves became mandatory, making teapots essential for steeping the leaves. The teapots and mugs that best enhance the flavor of tea are made in Yixing, west of Shanghai, from a local clay known as zisha (purple sand).

This clay is fired at high temperatures to create stoneware that is naturally waterproof without requiring glazing (as with earthenware). At the same time, its porous structure helps retain the heat, flavor, and aroma of the tea. Especially for the Made in China exhibition, Yixing mugs in various clay types have been designed.
