Amsterdam has been known for years as a tolerant city with a thriving gay community. In the nineties, Amsterdam was even Gay Capital of the World. However, these freedoms have not been obtained without a struggle.
Amsterdam, the pink history tells the history of gay men and women in the capital: from secret homosexual practices in pubs and caverns at the beginning of the twentieth century through the first steps of gay emancipation to the flourishing of a provocative subculture from the 1970s and the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2001.
The role of the municipality of Amsterdam has turned 180 degrees in a hundred years. Previously, the city council and its police officers opposed gay men and women, but today Amsterdam supports and protects its queer community. Amsterdam, the pink history focuses on areas in which the rainbow family is most visible in the city: culture, activism and emancipation, catering and nightlife.
