Maria Sibylla Merian

The Rijksmuseum has acquired a first edition of Maria Sibylla Merian’s Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium. The natural history work from 1705 is a masterpiece in Merian’s oeuvre and a highlight in Dutch book production in the eighteenth century.

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was an extraordinary figure in both the art and science worlds. Born in Germany, she became renowned for her meticulous botanical and zoological illustrations, which were groundbreaking for their scientific accuracy and artistic beauty. Merian’s work bridged the gap between art and natural history, making her a pioneer in both fields.

Her most famous work, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, published in 1705, documented the insects and plants she studied during her two-year expedition to Suriname. This book was revolutionary in the way it depicted the life cycles of insects and their relationship with the plants they depended on. Merian’s work challenged existing scientific theories and laid the foundation for modern entomology.
