Stanley Kubrick turned Stephen King’s horror story The Shining into a nerve-wracking film full of misanthropic undertones, with Nicholson as the psychotic writer in marital crisis. Kubrick spent three years working on this now legendary production about the destruction of the family. He had the hotel built in the studio and experimented extensively with the Steadicam. Nicholson’s performance as the crazy father and failed novelist Jack Torrance continues to be crushingly maniacal, sinister and hilarious.

About the book

The Shining: A Visual and Cultural Haunting is an immersive, multi-dimensional examination of one of the most infamous films in cinematic history. This loose-leafed and beautifully boxed book — disguised as the writing project Jack is typing throughout the course of the film – explores the film’s cultural legacy through exclusive essays, original recollections and rare, exclusive interviews with lead actors Shelley Duvall (Wendy Torrance) and Dan Lloyd (Danny Torrance), along with a wealth of contributors including Cosey Fanni Tutti, Margaret Howell, James Lavelle (UNKLE), Gavin Turk and John Grindrod.
