En se r\u00e9f\u00e9rant \u00e0 Joan Mitchell, Louise Bourgeois, Cindy Sherman et bien d’autres, Nochlin diagnostique la situation des femmes et de l’art avec une pr\u00e9cision et une verve in\u00e9gal\u00e9es. \u00ab Pourquoi n’y a-t-il pas eu de grandes femmes artistes ? \u00bb est devenu un slogan et un cri de ralliement qui r\u00e9sonne dans toute la culture et la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 ; Dior l’a m\u00eame adopt\u00e9 dans ses collections 2018. L’essai fondateur de Linda Nochlin sur les femmes artistes est largement reconnu comme la premi\u00e8re v\u00e9ritable tentative d’\u00e9criture d’une histoire f\u00e9ministe de l’art. Nochlin a refus\u00e9 d’aborder la question de l’absence de \u00ab grandes femmes artistes \u00bb selon les termes corrompus qui lui \u00e9taient impos\u00e9s. Elle a pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 d\u00e9manteler le concept m\u00eame de \u00ab grandeur \u00bb, d\u00e9m\u00ealant les hypoth\u00e8ses fondamentales qui avaient plac\u00e9 le \u00ab g\u00e9nie \u00bb masculin au centre de l’\u00e9tude de l’art. Avec une perspicacit\u00e9 sans pareille et un esprit \u00e9tonnant, Nochlin a mis \u00e0 nu l’acceptation du point de vue masculin blanc dans la pens\u00e9e historique de l’art, non seulement comme un \u00e9chec moral, mais aussi comme un \u00e9chec intellectuel.
