Ce savoir constituait une source essentielle de force et de r\u00e9sistance. Les personnes asservies reconnaissaient dans la flore surinamaise des plantes apparent\u00e9es \u00e0 des esp\u00e8ces africaines et savaient quelles feuilles poss\u00e9daient des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9dicinales et quelles plantes \u00e9taient comestibles ou toxiques. Elles savaient aussi comment utiliser ces plantes pour survivre, voire empoisonner leurs oppresseurs. Ce savoir-faire ancestral leur a permis d&rsquo;endurer des conditions de vie extr\u00eamement difficiles, de s&rsquo;\u00e9vader, de survivre et de fonder des communaut\u00e9s libres dans les denses for\u00eats tropicales du Suriname.    <\/p>\n<p>Pour ce projet, Piergoelam s&rsquo;est rendue pour la premi\u00e8re fois au Suriname, pays natal de ses parents, en 2024. Au cours de son p\u00e9riple \u00e0 travers la for\u00eat tropicale, elle a photographi\u00e9 des plantes d\u00e9crites pour la premi\u00e8re fois en 1755 par le biologiste su\u00e9dois Daniel Rolander. Observateur europ\u00e9en, Rolander a document\u00e9 l&rsquo;usage des plantes au Suriname et consign\u00e9 les \u00e9changes de connaissances entre les personnes r\u00e9duites en esclavage et les communaut\u00e9s locales. Ses r\u00e9cits de r\u00e9sistance, des actes quotidiens aux courageuses tentatives d&rsquo;\u00e9vasion, et son observation selon laquelle les personnes r\u00e9duites en esclavage connaissaient la for\u00eat \u00ab comme leur poche \u00bb, sont devenus une source d&rsquo;inspiration majeure pour Piergoelam. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une collaboration avec des biologistes de Naturalis et des partenaires locaux au Suriname, notamment Irvin Ristie, qui l&rsquo;a guid\u00e9e dans la for\u00eat tropicale, et le chaman Amashina Oedemmaloe, le projet tisse des liens \u00e9troits entre art, chamanisme et science.    <\/p>\n<p>Au Suriname, de nombreuses coutumes traditionnelles sont rest\u00e9es largement inchang\u00e9es. On continue de sculpter des coupes dans le bois blanc du kwasibita et de les remplir d&rsquo;eau ou d&rsquo;alcool ; cette boisson am\u00e8re est utilis\u00e9e pour combattre la fi\u00e8vre palud\u00e9enne. Le drunguman (ivrogne), plante tr\u00e8s toxique ainsi nomm\u00e9e en raison de la d\u00e9marche titubante qu&rsquo;elle provoque, n&rsquo;est plus utilis\u00e9 pour empoisonner les Europ\u00e9ens, mais subsiste dans les bains de plantes destin\u00e9s \u00e0 conjurer les forces du mal. Le Suriname, soci\u00e9t\u00e9 multiculturelle \u00e0 la biodiversit\u00e9 exceptionnelle, poss\u00e8de des milliers de noms de plantes locales, dont certains n&rsquo;ont pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9pertori\u00e9s. Pr\u00e8s de 270 ans apr\u00e8s Rolander, la for\u00eat tropicale surinamaise rec\u00e8le encore de nouvelles histoires qui ne demandent qu&rsquo;\u00e0 \u00eatre racont\u00e9es et r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9es.    <\/p>\n<p>Dans le cadre de cette pratique plus large, \u00ab Quatorze feuilles et une tasse d\u2019eau \u00bb constitue le troisi\u00e8me chapitre du projet en cours de Piergoelam, \u00ab Les contes d\u00e9m\u00eal\u00e9s \u00bb (2020-pr\u00e9sent), o\u00f9 elle explore les sources d\u2019espoir et de force chez les personnes r\u00e9duites en esclavage au Suriname. Son travail se concentre sur les histoires sous-repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es, les traditions orales et la r\u00e9silience de la m\u00e9moire culturelle.
