One writer showed him the way early on: Rudy Kousbroek (1929-2010). One of the most original essayists in our language area. No one wrote with so much passion and indignation about the colonial legacy, the Japanese occupation and the processing of the loss of the Dutch East Indies. In 1992, almost all his articles on this subject were collected in The East Indian Camp Syndrome (Het Oostindisch kampsyndroom), an interesting book that caused a lot of unrest among former East Indies visitors. For Van Dis it was a liberating lesson in progressive insight, and a source of inspiration for The Colony Hits Back.
