1946. In Indonesia, ‘nationalists’ have declared the country’s independence and the former colonials in the Netherlands do not like that. Johan Knevel and Eric Verhagen return to the country where they grew up as volunteers as part of a large Dutch force. Each has its own motivation. Johan longs for that piece of lost paradise and wants to know what happened to his Indonesian baboe or nanny. Eric sides with the communists and nationalists. For neither of them is the reunion what they expected.
