The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) has left an indelible impression worldwide with her daring sense of beauty and inspiring life story. This uncrowned selfie queen grew into a true icon thanks to her famous art, striking appearance and turbulent existence. Although Frida Kahlo’s life was largely determined by adversity, she managed to turn her pain and emotional struggle into extraordinary and taboo-breaking works.
The catalogue Viva la Frida! Life and art of Frida Kahlo opens up the world of Frida Kahlo and the way culture, politics, gender, disability and national identity have influenced her. For the first time, Museo Dolores Olmedo’s world-famous collections of paintings and drawings, as well as personal belongings such as her flamboyant clothing, corsets and jewelry from the Museo Frida Kahlo collection, are on display together.
This colorful and surprising catalogue unravels Frida Kahlo’s rebellious image and identity while also shedding light on the influence of Dutch artists such as Bosch, Breughel, Rembrandt and Van Gogh on her work. Her free spirit has a pronounced impact on contemporary art, fashion and music. Viva la Frida! Life and art of Frida Kahlo shows it all.
The exhibition can be visited in the Drents Museum from 8 October 2021 to 27 March 2022.
