The Moninckx atlas was made between 1686 en 1709. Jan Moninckx painted most of the 420 large watercolor paintings paper, depicting the plants of the Hortus Amsterdam on parchment. But also Maria Moninckx, possibly his daughter, and other painters contributed to this masterpiece of Dutch botanical pictures in the 17th century.

Allard Pierson Museum
The Allard Pierson shares the collections of the University of Amsterdam with visitors and scholars. The museum presents 10,000 years of cultural history, from the Nile to the Amstel River. Internationally renowned collections in the areas of archaeology, the history of books, Jewish culture, church history, cartography, literature, graphic design and zoology make this one of the leading heritage collections in Europe.
The museum is named after Allard Pierson (1831-1896), one of the most progressive thinkers of the 19th century. When the University of Amsterdam was established officially in 1877, Allard Pierson was chosen as professor of art history, aesthetics and modern languages. As a passionate lover of the arts and science in the broadest sense of the words, he was an example to many students.
