In Fourteen Leaves and a Cup of Water erforscht Michelle Piergoelam (NL)<\/a> das botanische Wissen versklavter Gemeinschaften in Suriname. Dieses Wissen bildete eine wichtige Quelle der St\u00e4rke und des Widerstands. Die Versklavten erkannten Pflanzen der surinamischen Flora, die mit Arten aus Afrika verwandt waren, und wussten, welche Bl\u00e4tter heilende Eigenschaften besa\u00dfen und welche Pflanzen essbar oder giftig waren. Sie wussten auch, wie sie diese Pflanzen zum \u00dcberleben nutzen konnten \u2013 sogar, um ihre Unterdr\u00fccker zu vergiften. Dieses tief verwurzelte Wissen erm\u00f6glichte es ihnen, die harten Bedingungen zu ertragen, zu fliehen, zu \u00fcberleben und freie Gemeinschaften in den dichten Regenw\u00e4ldern Surinams zu gr\u00fcnden. <\/p>\n

F\u00fcr dieses Projekt reiste Piergoelam 2024 zum ersten Mal nach Suriname, dem Geburtsland ihrer Eltern. Auf ihrer Reise durch den Regenwald fotografierte sie Pflanzen, die der schwedische Biologe Daniel Rolander 1755 erstmals beschrieben hatte. Rolander, ein europ\u00e4ischer Beobachter, dokumentierte die Nutzung von Pflanzen in Suriname und hielt den Wissensaustausch zwischen versklavten Menschen und der lokalen Bev\u00f6lkerung fest. Seine Berichte \u00fcber den Widerstand \u2013 von allt\u00e4glichen Aktionen bis hin zu mutigen Fluchtversuchen \u2013 und seine Beobachtung, dass die Versklavten den Wald \u201ewie ihre Westentasche\u201c kannten, wurden zu einer wichtigen Inspirationsquelle f\u00fcr Piergoelam. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Biologen von Naturalis und lokalen Partnern in Suriname, darunter Irvin Ristie, der Piergoelam durch den Regenwald f\u00fchrte, und der Schamanin Amashina Oedemmaloe, verbindet das Projekt auf kunstvolle Weise Kunst, Schamanismus und Wissenschaft. <\/p>\n

Viele traditionelle Br\u00e4uche in Suriname sind weitgehend unver\u00e4ndert geblieben. Noch immer werden Becher aus dem wei\u00dfen Holz des Kwasibita-Baumes geschnitzt und mit Wasser oder Alkohol gef\u00fcllt; das bittere Getr\u00e4nk wird zur Bek\u00e4mpfung von Malaria eingesetzt. Das hochgiftige Drunguman (Trunkenbold), benannt nach dem schwankenden Gang, der nach dem Genuss des Krauts auftritt, wird zwar nicht mehr zur Vergiftung von Europ\u00e4ern verwendet, findet aber weiterhin Verwendung in Kr\u00e4uterb\u00e4dern, die \u00fcbernat\u00fcrliche Feinde abwehren sollen. Suriname, eine multikulturelle Gesellschaft mit au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnlicher Artenvielfalt, besitzt Tausende von einheimischen Pflanzennamen, von denen noch nicht alle dokumentiert sind. Fast 270 Jahre nach Rolander birgt der surinamale Regenwald weiterhin neue Geschichten, die darauf warten, geh\u00f6rt und sichtbar gemacht zu werden. <\/p>\n

Innerhalb dieses umfassenderen k\u00fcnstlerischen Schaffens bildet \u201eFourteen Leaves and a Cup of Water\u201c das dritte Kapitel von Piergoelams fortlaufendem Projekt \u201eDie entwirrten Geschichten\u201c (2020\u2013heute), in dem sie die Quellen der Hoffnung und St\u00e4rke versklavter Menschen in Suriname erforscht. Ihre Arbeit konzentriert sich auf unterrepr\u00e4sentierte Geschichten, m\u00fcndliche \u00dcberlieferungen und die Widerstandsf\u00e4higkeit des kulturellen Ged\u00e4chtnisses.
