The first nativity scene was built in 1223 by Francis of Asissi. He created a living nativity scene in the forests of Creccio, Italy, to allow the villagers to relive the birth of Christ in Bethlehem. Many followed his example. First, nativity scenes appeared in churches and palaces, but later they also appeared in ordinary people’s homes.
Fransiscus‘ stable was full size and contained live animals. Miniature versions also emerged around 1500. These sets were often made of wood or wax, but there are also extremely detailed earthenware examples.
The number of figures varies greatly by country and tradition. This Delft blue stable contains the most common characters: Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Ox, Donkey, shepherd and a flock of sheep. The three kings are also there, but they don’t actually arrive at the stable until January 6.
