About the Exhibition: Stad houdt stand – 350 jaar Groningens ontzet
1672 was a disaster year for the Netherlands. It was attacked by four countries: at sea by England, from the south by France and from the east by the German prince-bishops of Münster and Cologne. Soon much of the country was in the hands of the enemy. The city of Groningen was also bombed for weeks, but it held out and on August 27 the Germans withdrew quietly. The preservation of the city proved to be a turning point in the disaster year.
To this day, the Groningen Relief is celebrated on August 28. The exhibition contains authentic paintings, objects and documents and even cannons from this heroic battle.
The exhibition can be visited in the Groninger Museum until Sunday 30 October 2022.
