In his own time, the Drenthe artist and writer Albert Steenbergen (1814-1900) was a very well-known Drenthe artist. Despite his disability, which meant he was dependent on aids, he went out as a boy to catch insects. He drew them very accurately. His talent was noticed and he left for Hilversum to further develop himself as an artist. After several successful years as a painter of flower and fruit still lifes in Haarlem and Amsterdam, Steenbergen returned to his birthplace Hoogeveen. There he increasingly left his brushes behind and picked up the pen. In the years that followed, he wrote several plays, novellas and poems. It earned him great fame but also criticism. In The Fantastic Reality of Albert Steenbergen, the Drents Museum brings his art and literature together for the first time.
