Dacia – ancient Romania – has been known in classical antiquity as an ’empire of gold and silver’. The countless archaeological treasures found here in the twentieth century show that the rumors about Dacian wealth were not unfounded. But the Dacians were more than just lovers of gold and silver: they built imposing hill fortresses, traded with distant kingdoms, and shaped the imposing landscape of the Carpathian Mountains to their own advantage. New archaeological research shows how the Dacian kingdoms emerged over a period of more than two thousand years. Due to the influences of various peoples such as the Scythians, the Greeks and the Celts, the Dacians formed their own culture. All these different elements can be seen in burial practices, mythology and architecture.
