Many fossils from the Jurassic period are found in the slate layers of Solnhofen.  The ancient bird Archeopteryx was also found there.  At the time, this area contained a lagoon in open connection with the ocean.  At high tide, dead animals sank to the muddy bottom, on which lime and all kinds of decaying material ended up.  Closed off from air, animals could fossilize completely.  This extinct crustacean had a well-developed rostrum and short stout front legs with pincers.
